More often than not, we enjoy sharing a lettuce trio in a big salad with dinner, simply dressed with my favourite olive oil and two pieces of bread. I love it!
Paulmar Hydroponics Story
Well known for its proximity to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Paul Mifsud left his native Mellieha Malta to settle near Melbourne. In the optimistic search for a better life, he met the love of his life, Mary who settled in Australia at 7 years of age, migrating from Birkirkara, Malta. ‘It was love at first sight’, Paul reminisces fondly ‘and we married about one year later’.
Little did the newly-weds know that an invitation to Paul’s cousin’s 21st birthday celebration would change their lives. They toured Darren’s farm and Paul fell in love with it. ‘It was beautiful seeing all these iceberg lettuces growing hydroponically, above the ground, away from soil. It was so clean, green and fresh. When we got home we decided that this was going to be our next challenge and future,’ said Paul.
Paul and Mary built their first greenhouse in 1994 on the Bellarine Penisula, growing iceberg then fancy loose-leaf lettuce and most recently introduced Symphony LettuceTM, a trio of green Coral, Green and Red Oak. Their chef qualified son, Michael, joined his parents in 2001 and the family trio haven’t looked back implementing world’s best practices in growing techniques and infrastructure.
