In the late 1930’s, when the United States was starting to stretch from the Great Depression, a young Stanford graduate came to California’s Salinas Valley seeking employment.
H.W. “Cy” Mann started his agricultural career trimming fruit and lettuce for 40 cents per hour. He loaded grain onto boxcars and through hard work and dedication, eventually became foreman of a produce shed.
It was 1939 when he opened a fresh carrot packing operation called H.W. Mann. It was soon thereafter that Mr. Mann found his niche in the fresh vegetable industry: broccoli.
In 1955 Bill Ramsey joined the firm to head up the growing operations. Further growth in the company warranted the need for an office manager and Bill encouraged Mr. Mann to interview his wife’s cousin—Don Nucci. Nucci was brought on board in 1967 and eventually started heading up the sales and marketing efforts.
With an ailing wife at home Mr. Mann was committed to caring for her and realized he wouldn’t be able to do so and run his business without partners—so in 1976 he made Bill Ramsey and Don Nucci partners in the firm.
Mr. Mann passed away in 1996 and having no children, Bill Ramsey and Don Nucci purchased his share of the company, becoming equal partners.
For many years the three men led Mann Packing to becoming the world’s largest shipper of fresh broccoli. They soon ventured into other produce items, and now Mann ships over 30 different fresh vegetables—from asparagus to romaine, 365 days per year. The company sells produce to the retail, wholesale and foodservice marketplaces.
In the early 1990s, Mann Packing responded to the fast pace of today’s consumer lifestyles and started shipping fresh vegetables fresh-cut, washed, preservative free—and ready to eat. Mann Packing has been a pioneer in the fresh-cut vegetable business and is now venturing into party trays and other snack packs.
The company runs today with third and fourth generation family members. Lorri (Nucci) Koster became CEO in December 2011 and Dick Ramsey is Senior VP of field operations. Both hold seats on the board of directors, along with Mike Mann, Mr. Mann's nephew, and two outside members, Elin Dowd and Betsy Sanders.
Mann Packing is a family-owned company with generations of many families working for the organization.
