Perth show-goers treated to fresh salads - Western Australia

Love My Salad treated Perth Royal Show goers everyday to vegetable seedlings and fresh salads. Three local Western Australian salad growers provided freshly harvested produce and demonstrated their favourite salads in the My Habitat Sustainable Garden.

Love My Salad provided 20,000 lettuce seedlings, provided by Rijk Zwaan Australia, for the "Yellow Brick Road," activity that encouraged children to learn about growing edible plants, establish a home vegetable garden and eat healthily.

Through Love My Salad, the social salad networking site, big-hearted local growers shared their love of salads. Interviewed by Jesinta Burton dressed as a fancy lettuce, the demonstrations were led by Maureen Dobra of the Loose Leaf Lettuce Company, followed by Lachlan Grierson of Supa Fresh, and finished off with Damien Rigali of Gourmet Fresh Farm who took to the stage with resounding gusto.

Guests were spoilt as they enjoyed a special tasting experience sampling some of the local produce. ‘We are seeing fresh-cut salads, especially lettuce, taking centre stage on the plate. My staple diet consists of cos lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums and mushrooms. I have my five vegetables a day easily in that mix! Even in winter, we enjoy a big hearty salad with our BBQ’, said grower Maureen Dobra who is the President of the Western Australian Vegetable Growers Association and in 2005 won the RIRDC Rural Women of WA Award.

The Perth Royal Show was held from September 29 to October 6 2012. Perth Western Australia. You can see all the wonderful photos here
