Let's go dack to our roots and discover
Carrot is one of the first crops that can be grown well before spring arrives. It’s almost magical, the fresh young leaves bravely trying to grab the first rays of sunlight, whilst the landscape surrounding them is nothing more than dry and withered. It symbolises life, even when everything is destroyed, we are able to survive and rebuild something beautiful. More beautiful than previously, just like the carrot. When comes harvest we discover a beautiful root sheltering under those pretty greens. Deeply tucked in the soil, it manages to grow a beautiful orange colour.
But don’t take the orange colour for granted. We might think its a carrot’s original colour but history shows that the orange variety didn’t exist. Medieval people only knew black, white and yellow carrots. The ‘primal carrot’ is of a dark purple colour, near black, with an orange-yellowish coloured core. The orange carrot is, of course, of Dutch origin. Orange being the colour of the Dutch Queen (soon to be King).
Fortunately, in Greengroceries, a well selected product range will include the yellow, purple, white and primal variation and the well known, trusted orange root. With any luck, you’ll even find the parsnip, a very tasteful ancestor of our very own carrot.
