String beans are part of the larger legume family, with beans being their immature fruits. Also known as string beans and snap beans, they are cultivated globally for their sweet flavour and the crunch they can add to many dishes.

The green bean is the chic, straight and slender sister among these. Often grown on simple trellises, they are a favourite for home gardeners and with their fast growth rates and are fun for kids to enjoy growing and picking their own produce.

How to prepare

Give the beans a good wash over. Remove the stalky end and either keep whole or cut into smaller bite size pieces. Typically they are simmered in water, steamed, stir fried or added to stews and casseroles.

  • Simmered: 4 - 6 minutes
  • Sautéed: 6 - 8 minutes
  • Steamed: 6 - 8 minutes
  • Stir-fried: 4-6 minutes

Buyer's and storage guide

Make sure that the beans look fresh, green and strong, with no brown marks.
